Bringing hands-on food and farming education to Cornish children of all ages

Since the Royal Cornwall Show in June, our trusty Farm & Country Roadshow has been seen all around Cornwall and Devon, bringing hands-on food and farming education to children of all ages.

Each summer, once we have packed up the Food Chain Hub at our annual Royal Cornwall Show, we visit many one-day agricultural shows across the south west so that we can keep the message of the field to fork trail going.

This year we visited shows and events we have not done before, such as Stithians Show, where we were part of their Sunflower Trail, in which children visiting the event can go on an adventure to see lots of fun exhibits and activities, all while collecting stamps along the way!

Other events that we attended included Yealmpton Show, Launceston Show, Woolsery Show, Camborne Show, and Holsworthy & Stratton Show.

As well as agricultural shows, we have also attended a number of Freshers’ Fairs, including Duchy and Bicton Colleges to share information and spark inspiration in a wider range of agricultural careers, from dairy processing, to agronomy, to engineering. This is to encourage interest in more niche areas of the industry.

Now that we are into the Autumn term, we are back to our usual activity of visiting primary schools across Cornwall, now until Christmas, and continue once again the New Year. Our Farm & Country Roadshow Trailer is fully equipped as a mobile classroom to deliver fun and educational sessions focusing on the food and farming industry that makes up so much of Cornwall.

In March we will be holding our annual Farm & Country Days, where 1500 year 3 & 4 students will take part in dozens of hands-on activities from cow milking, to cheesemaking, all inside our large exhibitions halls here at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre.

Always a popular event, Farm & Country Days cannot be run without the generosity of our volunteers which make up our Exhibitors, Stewards and School Hosts.
