A prestigious award for the development of business skills in young people is now seeking nominations.
The Duke of Cornwall’s Award is designed to encourage the teaching and development of traditional skills to young people within Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
The winners will be presented with a trophy at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show (7 – 9 June) and will receive a cheque for £1,000 and a certificate signed by HRH The Duke of Cornwall.
Administered by the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association (RCAA), the award has been running since 2007 and has been presented to people in widely differing areas of work.
Last year’s award was won by a family baker. Others to have won are a master thatcher, hedgers and a shipwright. RCAA secretary Christopher Riddle says the award not only recognises the value of the work done by the winners but the £1,000 that goes with it is of real value.
“Cornwall’s traditional industries are important to the local economy and form part of the character and culture of the county. This award is doing a great deal towards keeping the necessary skills alive and thriving amongst the younger generation of workers and entrepreneurs,” he said
Any appropriate individual, business or organisation can be nominated by a third party.
A short list of finalists will be drawn up following the close of entries on 1st February and judging will take place in March / April.
Application forms can be obtained from Christopher Riddle, Secretary, Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, Wadebridge. PL27 7JE or telephone 01208 812183 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
The trophy is made of Cornish oak and features an inlaid plaque of Cornish tin, bearing the emblems of the Duchy of Cornwall and the RCAA.
